Experience the Beauty of Cabo de Rama Fort

The Cabo de Rama Fort is located in the Goan district of Canacona in the southernmost tip of Goa. The fort is a distance of 29 kilometers from the major Goan city Margao. 

The fort finds itself situated between two famous beaches in South Goa, Cavelossim and Agonda. Cavelossim beach is about 20 kilometers towards the north, while the Agonda beach is about 17 kilometers to the south.

Below the location of where the fort lies, is another beautiful beach called the ‘Cabo de Rama Beach.’ 

It is said that the Cabo da Rama Fort, previously known as the ‘Cape Rama’ derived its name from Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana, who, along with his wife Sita, took refuge up here during his exile from Ayodhya.

The Cabo de Rama Fort was invaded by many armies at different periods during the past historical years and has witnessed numerous battles on its grounds, particularly naval ones.

This fort served as a prison for political leaders during the Portuguese rule. 

The cape is crowned by a fort, which was initially a Hindu structure and was later rebuilt by the Portuguese in the year 1763 after they captured it from the Maratha King of Sonda. 

In the year of 1792, The British rulers captured the fort from the Portuguese, and in 1813 they abandoned the fort, which then later turned into a prison in 1955.

The Fort has a great barrier of defenses along with a moat, gatehouse, and several bastions. Many of the bastions still have large cannons lying silently above them.

The fort also has a well and two springs from which cold and hot water used to emerge from two different nozzles. The Fort also houses a large water tank within its premises. 

This structure of Cabo de Rama Fort houses a small chapel which, till date, is still used by the locals. Besides, the chapel is a small grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The western side of the fort, where the cliffs drop sharply to the sea, provides a great view both to the north and south parts of the fort and is a beautiful place to take a snap! 

The entire Fort spreads across a total area of 18000 square meters.

The fort lies at a distance of 27 km from Margao Railway Statio, which is the closest railways to the fort.

By Air

The Dabolim International Airport is 52 km from Cabo de Rama Fort.
